Getting Around Bhutan
Bhutan's rugged mountain terrain means that transport is an adventure in itself. Paro International Airport is one of the world's most challenging, bus travel is scenic but slow, and roads wind through dramatic valleys.

By Air — Paro International Airport
Paro International Airport (IATA: PBH) is the only international airport in Bhutan and one of the most technically demanding in the world. Surrounded by the Himalayan peaks of the Paro Valley, the approach requires pilots to fly visually through a narrow mountain valley, bank steeply, and land on a 1,964-metre runway. Special training and certification is mandatory — fewer than 30 pilots worldwide are certified to fly into Paro.
Flights are only permitted during daylight hours when visibility is adequate. Delays and cancellations due to weather (especially fog and cloud) are common, particularly in winter and monsoon months. Build buffer days into your itinerary if flying in or out of Paro.

By Bus — BCTA Bus Service
The Bhutan Corporation Transport Authority (BCTA) operates public bus services between major towns. Buses are the most affordable way to travel long distances, though journeys are slow due to winding mountain roads.
BCTA uses a declining slab system — the per-km rate decreases as the journey gets longer.

Road Conditions
Mountain Road Hazards
Bhutan's roads are narrow, winding, and often unpaved in remote areas. Landslides (especially during June–August monsoon) can block roads for hours or days. The journey from Thimphu to Bumthang takes 7–8 hours under good conditions. Always plan for delays.
